Magic Johnson to Announce New Treatment Clinics on World AIDS Day
Basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson stunned the country in 1991 when he announced that he was HIV positive and immediately retired from the NBA. Twenty years later, the HIV/AIDS advocate is still going strong and bringing about awareness through his Magic Johnson Foundation. In honor of the 23rd annual World AIDS Day, he and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation are teaming up to announce plans to open three new AHF/Magic Johnson treatment clinics, promote their HIV testing caravans, and present an award.
There are already six free AHF "Magic" Johnson Healthcare Centers and now the two groups are expanding their services by opening clinics in Brooklyn, NY; Atlanta, GA; and Ft. Worth, TX.
The two foundations are also kicking off HIV testing caravans that will be placed throughout Los Angeles County for day-long free tests. There will be free screenings available in the state's Bay Area as well as in Florida and Washington, D.C.
In addition, Johnson will be presenting the second annual "World AIDS Day Magic Award" to Cynthia Davis, a longtime AIDS advocate and program director and assistant professor at the Medical Sciences Institute at Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science.
The World AIDS Day event will take place Thursday at 9:45 a.m. PT at the AHF Magic Johnson Clinic at Carl Bean Center in Los Angeles.
