Serena Williams Becomes Co-Owner of WNBA’s Toronto Tempo
Serena Williams has made an entrepreneurial move into the WNBA.
According to ESPN, the retired professional tennis legend has joined the ownership group of the Toronto Tempo, the WNBA’s fifteenth team, which will launch its first season in 2026, followed by an expansion draft after 2025. Teresa Resch serves as team president with Kilmer Sports Ventures as the team's principal owner, while Larry Tanenbaum chairs Toronto Tempo.
“This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes – I have always said that women's sports are an incredible investment opportunity,” Williams stated. “I am excited to partner with Larry [Tanenbaum] and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy.”
“Serena Williams is an icon, a role model and a force for change in the world,” Tanenbaum added. “She's earned every bit of her incredible success with hard work, tenacity and determination in the face of countless challenges. She exemplifies the very best of what the Tempo stand for – we couldn't be more honored to have Serena in our court.”
Williams, who owns stakes in the Miami Dolphins, Angel City FC and Los Angeles Golf Club, will collaborate with the team to design jerseys and develop merchandising partnerships.
While Williams has also founded several brands, including WYN Beauty, S By Serena, and a venture capital fund, she continues to influence sports. Last year, she made a special appearance during Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime show.
