Celebs, Fashion Elite Expected to Turn Up for Latex Ball

Annual NYC event has influenced Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé.

Fashion will get extra fab this Saturday at the Latex Ball. The annual New York City event, put on by Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) and attended by the elite of the fashion industry, is a competition event with categories in modeling, fashion, beauty and "voguing," the dance Madonna borrowed for her 1990 hit "Vogue."
In fact, the Latex Ball and the ballroom community have influenced mainstream pop stars like Janet Jackson, Beyoncè, Lady Gaga and countless more. Balls date back to 1920s Harlem when Black drag queens could not compete in white drag queen pageants, which prompted the Black drag queens to start their own functions.
GMHC uses the event as a means to provide information on the prevention, care and advocacy of HIV/AIDS. The high-fashion event brings together entertainment and education under one roof. This year, that roof will be at New York City's Terminal Five on August 16 at 8 p.m.
There will undoubtedly be more than a few famous faces in the crowd (last year, Tamar Braxton made an appearance) and plenty of avante-garde fashion.
