Alabama Brothers at Center of Fatal Family Shooting

After allegedly shooting their mother, one son was killed by his sibling, who claims self-defense.

On June 8, 2025, in Auburn, Alabama, a family dispute turned tragic when 25‑year‑old Brandon McDuffie allegedly shot and killed his 52‑year‑old mother, Traci McDuffie, following an argument, according to the Mobile Police Department (MPD).

Officers arrived around 5:39 p.m. local time, discovering both Traci and Brandon dead inside their home. Investigators reported that after Brandon shot his mother, his 32‑year‑old older brother, Brent McDuffie, witnessed the aftermath. Brandon allegedly then fired at Brent, who responded by shooting Brandon in what MPD described as an act of self‑defense.

The MPD stated that Brandon’s death will be presented to a grand jury, while Traci’s homicide is being treated separately. As of June 14, 2025, it remains unclear whether Brent will face charges.

A Facebook post from First Baptist Church of Baltimore Street, Inc., identified Brent and requested prayers for him and the family, noting a celebration‑of‑life service scheduled for June 21. Loved ones described Traci as “an exceptionally kind individual who will truly be missed,” and her sister added, “There is nothing bad that can be said about her. She was a hard worker and loved her live music,” as shared via Facebook.

MPD has not responded further to media inquiries, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities continue examining the chain of events and await the grand jury’s decision regarding Brandon’s death, while officials have yet to clarify any legal implications for Brent.
