Hip Hop Awards 2022: 5 of the Biggest Winning Moments from Last Year’s Ceremony

The BET Hip Hop Awards 2022 are just a few short weeks away, and we are taking a trip down memory lane, looking at some of the funniest moments, show-stopping performances, and even bigger wins. Before we get to one of the biggest nights in hip-hop culture, let’s look at the five biggest winners from last year’s ceremony.

  • Hip Hop Album of the Year

    Rapper Tyler the Creator took home the award for “Hip Hop Album of the Year” thanks to his Grammy Award-winning sixth studio album, Call Me If You Get Lost.

  • Hip Hop Artist of the Year

    Lil Baby took home the honors of 2021’s Hip Hop Artist of the Year, beating out a crowd of highly talented acts, including Cardi, Drake, J. Cole, Megan Thee Stallion, and Tyler the Creator.

  • Song of the Year

    The Ayo & Keyz-produced track “WAP,” performed by Cardi B Feat. Megan Thee Stallion took on a life of its own following its release in August 2020. The song has been viewed on Youtube over 470 million times and has earned several awards, including the 2021 Hip Hop Awards for “Song of the Year.”

  • Best Hip Hop Video

    In what was already an incredible night for rapper Cardi B, the Bronx native took home one of several awards, including “Best Hip Hop Video” for her smash hit “WAP,” featuring fellow rapper Megan thee Stallion. The visual was directed by award-winning filmmaker Collin Tilley, who's behind some of the most extensive music videos from artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Nick Minaj, and Chris Brown.

  • I Am Hip Hop Award

    Hip Hop veteran Nelly was honored with the “I Am Hip Hop Award” during the 2021 ceremony presented by friend and legendary producer Jermaine Dupri. During his acceptance speech, the “Country Grammar” rapper spoke about the influence LL Cool J had on him early on in his career, crediting him as a massive force to pursue his music in his way. “I started jacking a lot of his s**t from him,” he joked. “We talked about that; he’s forgiven me.”
