Mike Epsy's White U.S. Senate Opponent In Mississipi Said She'd Be 'Front Row' At A 'Public Hanging' If Invited
During a campaign event in Tupelo, Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith made a joke that’s rubbing everyone the wrong way.
Video surfaced showing Hyde-Smith at the November 2 gathering with supporters making the statement, “If he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row” and the crowd laughing in reply.
Hyde-Smith is currently in a runoff race against Mike Espy, a former Obama Administration official (U.S. Agriculture Secretary). He also posted the video on his Instagram. She was appointed by Governor Phil Bryant to fill Thad Cochran’s seat in March.
On November 27 the two Senatorial candidates will face off. Espy responded to the racist remark on Twitter. “Cindy Hyde-Smith’s comments are reprehensible,” he wrote. “They have no place in our political discourse, in Mississippi, or our country. We need leaders, not dividers, and her words show that she lacks the understanding and judgement to represent the people of our state.”
Cindy Hyde-Smith received 41.5 percent of the vote on Election Day while Espy earned 40.6 percent.
