LAPD Arrests Soulja Boy After Gun Found During Overnight Stop
Soulja Boy was taken into custody early Sunday morning in Los Angeles after police say they found a firearm during a traffic stop. According to ABC News, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) disclosed that the 35-year-old rapper, born DeAndre Cortez Way, was riding as a passenger when officers pulled over a vehicle near Genesee Avenue and Melrose Avenue.
Authorities say a gun was recovered from inside the car. Soulja Boy was arrested on a charge of felon in possession of a firearm and taken to the LAPD’s Wilshire Division jail. The arrest occurred around 2:50 a.m., based on online booking records. As of now, it’s not clear whether he’s been released or where he’s currently being held.
Representatives for Soulja Boy have not commented on the incident.
This is not the first time the rapper has faced legal trouble tied to weapons. In December 2016, he was arrested at his Hollywood Hills home after police said they discovered a gun while he was on probation. He later pleaded no contest to felony weapons possession and a misdemeanor count. In 2017, he was sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to complete 240 days of community service.
More recently, Soulja Boy was ordered to pay nearly a quarter of a million dollars in punitive damages tied to a 2019 incident. In April 2023, a jury awarded $235,900 to a woman who said the rapper assaulted her during a party at his Malibu home. That decision came just a week after she was granted an identical amount in compensatory damages. Soulja Boy denied the assault allegations.
At the time of his latest arrest, there were no additional details released about the firearm or other possible charges. The LAPD has not indicated whether other individuals in the vehicle were detained or cited. This case remains under investigation.
