Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick Announces Retirement

He’s helmed the HBCU for nine years through a series of highs and lows.

Howard University is announcing the retirement of its president, Wayne A.I. Frederick, which is slated to come in just over two years.

According to local Washington D.C. station WTOP, the announcement by the school says Frederick will stay in his position until June 2024 “to ensure a smooth transition of leadership.”

“I join my fellow trustees in expressing my profound gratitude to Dr. Frederick for his tireless, unwavering efforts to lead our University to greater academic excellence, fiscal strength, and service to our community and country,” Trustee Chair Laurence Morse wrote in the statement. “Needless to say, given his outstanding performance, the board desired that he would have chosen to remain in office longer.”

Frederick began as interim president of the HBCU in 2013 and assumed the permanent position the following year. Overall, he’s been a part of the Howard community for 34 years, according to the statement.

Selection process plans for the school’s next president will be shared “as they become available,” the announcement says.

Under Frederick, Howard announced a $785 million effort over the next four years to fund the creation of new buildings on campus, as well as renovations to existing ones. He also oversaw the highest student enrollment census in the school’s history, as well as a significant increase in financial aid for first-time college students.

Howard has also experienced unrest recently as workers from the University’s hospital have been striking this week over low wages and staffing challenges. The school also avoided a strike by faculty members in March, and last year, students protested over living conditions.
