Tropic Thunder," the Ben Stiller film that featurd Oscar nominee Robert Downey Jr. as an Australian actor playing a black man in the most expensive war movie ever made, did the seemingly impossible and topped "Dark Knight" to capture first place in the weekend box office derby.\r
Thunder," which also stars Brandon T. Jackson, Jack Black and Steve Coogan, took in a respectable $26 million in its opening weekend while "Knight" dropped down to the No. 2 spot with $16.8 million. The gothic novel caper starring Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Aaron Eckhart, has grossed more than $471 million. It remains the all-time No. 2 top-grossing film domestically behind "Titanic," which has made more than $600 million.\r
Thunder" might be able to hold on to the top spot for a second consecutive week as its competition this weekend is not all that formidable. Coming up is "The House Bunny" with a stable of teen queens including: Rumer Willis, Katherine McPhee, Anna Farris and Emma Stone; and "Longshots" starring Ice Cube and Keke Palmer.
