Charles W. Anderson is sworn in as a representative of the citizens of Louisville to the Kentucky General Assembly, making him the first Black legislator both in the state of Kentucky and in the South since the Reconstruction Era. Among his credits, Anderson successfully repealed Kentucky’s infamous public hanging law and pushed through legislation that required rural high schools to educate Black children in all 120 counties of the Commonwealth.
