White N.C. Police Officer Charged After Repeatedly Punching Black Woman in Video

North Carolina investigators charged a former officer after a video showed him repeatedly punching a woman in the face.

A former North Carolina police officer has been charged after a viral doorbell video appeared to show him repeatedly punching a woman during an arrest in Shelby, North Carolina. The violent incident immediately raised questions about the use of excessive force and police brutality. ABC News shares that investigators are still reviewing what happened before the clip began.

Karson Hyder, 22, turned himself in Monday and was charged by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation with one count of assault inflicting serious injury. He was processed at the Cleveland County Detention Center and released on a $10,000 secured bond, the bureau said.

The agency said it opened the probe at the request of Shelby’s police chief and the Cleveland County district attorney after an allegation of excessive force.

The video, recorded last Friday, shows Hyder tackling 34-year-old Cherrie Moore during an arrest. He is then seen repeatedly punching her in the face before another officer steps in. Moore, whose family says is homeless and has mental health struggles, suffered a broken nose

Authorities have not said what led to the confrontation, and that remains a key unanswered question in the case. Though court records show the officer was involved in a previous incident with Moore last year.

"We just want the right thing done, and I think the first right thing is that he be charged," said Moore's uncle, Michael Moore, to ABC News. "Once he's charged, then we can move forward."

Hyder was fired from his job and is no longer working with the Shelby Police Department, according to the report.

The investigation is ongoing.
