Nobody’s Feuding—At Least Not Taraji: Breaking Down Black Celebrity Beefs, Real and Rumored
On Jay-z’s "4:44" album, he famously instituted a cultural call to action with the line, "Nobody wins when the family feuds ... We all lose when the family feuds."
So now when there is a feud within the Black celebrity zeitgeist we all feel it and apply this notion--nobody wins.
Here are some feuds that were real, some fabricated, and some eventually resolved.
Oprah and Taraji
In the 2023 remake of "The Color Purple," produced by Oprah Winfrey and others, Taraji P. Henson played the iconic Shug Avery. While promoting the film, Taraji spoke about the pay disparity that Black women face in Hollywood. This is how the alleged feud started--sparking speculation that Oprah and Taraji had tension on set.
"I think it was just a campaign so that this Black movie wouldn't do well," the Oscar-nominated actress said about rumors of a feud between her and Winfrey on the Friday, June 6 episode of The Breakfast Club.
Snoop Dogg and Warren G
After the 2022 Super Bowl halftime performance, Warren G wanted his son to meet rap icons Snoop and Dr. Dre. He was disappointed when no one answered his calls. Snoop went on to shed some light on the complicated history between these hip-hop legends.
Kendrick and Drake
This feud broke the rule, because there was a clear winner. We won. The fans won musically, and we won by being able to witness one of hip hop's most epic battles.
Offset and Stefon Diggs’ Braids
It seems this feud is really between the couple ending their nuptials, yet somehow Digg’s braids got caught in the mix. According to Page Six, Wave, Offset's son, had been wearing the braided style since at least April. Diggs was first spotted with the same pattern only recently while training with the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts.
Candace Owens v Everybody
Imagine getting into a battle with the most elegant entertainer Mom. Ms. Tina does not play about her daughters so when rabble rouser Owens went on attack Mama Tina said not today. Whether Ms. Owens is family might be in question, and perhaps Ms. Owens is attention seeking, but when we say feuding with everybody we’re not being hyperbolic:
Whether rooted in real tension or just internet speculation, these moments say more about us than the stars involved. In a world where every post, braid, or bar is dissected like scripture, the idea of a “family feud” has gone from private fallout to public fascination. But as Taraji reminded us, not every headline tells the whole story—and sometimes, the biggest flex is shutting it all down with grace.
