The WNBA Launches Its ‘Line ‘Em Up’ Campaign
The WNBA has announced the launch of “Line ‘Em Up,” a nationwide initiative aimed at bringing the women’s professional game to communities by painting the official WNBA 3-point line on the park basketball courts. As part of the initiative, the WNBA will also be making donations to several participating park courts.
Designed to create inclusivity in basketball spaces, inspiring girls, and for women to show off their ball skills at the park, the campaign continues the league’s “vision of building community, visibility, and representation in public spaces.”
Along with the launch of the initiative, the “W” will be releasing a short film that further spotlights the spirit and purpose behind “Line ‘Em Up.”
The film features guest appearances from WNBA stars and legends, including Tina Charles (Connecticut Sun), Epiphanny Prince, Chamique Holdsclaw, and Sue Bird.
Additionally, Alex Taylor, founder of Hoop York City and Dyckman Basketball's Chief Operating Officer, Sharon “Ms. B” Bond, also appear in the film.
Phil Cook, Chief Marketing Officer of the WNBA, spoke exclusively with BET.com about the importance of the initiative and the league’s vision to
“This is something that is near and dear to so many of our hearts at the WNBA. We want to inspire young athletes, young girls, to pick up a ball for the first time, and we want to keep those athletes playing in their later years. That's always been the intent of the WNBA, and it's been kind of woven into our DNA since our inception 29 years ago,” Cook said. “So this is something that we take very seriously at the league level, at the team level, and the players all recognize the value of growing the game.
“Line Em Up’ is a simple gesture, dropping an orange three-point line on outdoor parks in communities around the country, but it means so much. They can imagine what it's like to hit that three from the corner just like Naphesha Collier did to win a game, or Sabrina Ionescu here in New York did,” Cook continued. “I think that means so much that they're getting representation in a space where they otherwise weren't.”
To officially launch the initiative, the WNBA will host a launch event on Thursday, June
12, at 5:00 p.m. ET at Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 2. The event will feature remarks from Cook, Bethany Donaphin, WNBA Head of League Operations, and special guest appearances from the New York Liberty, as well as a 5-on-5 game between two local New York basketball teams.
