Ohio Family Mourns The Death of Son Killed in Iraq Plane Crash

“We didn’t need to be in this war,” says the family.

The Columbus community is reeling after the death of 28-year-old Tyler H. Simmons.

The Tech Sgt. died on Thursday after the KC-135 refueling plane he was on crashed in western Iraq, which also claimed the lives of five other service members, according to 10WBNS.

“He had a million-dollar smile. When people see my cousin, they'd be like, that smile is gonna take him places, and it took him to his dream job,” said Tracy Peaks, Simmons’ cousin.

The crash happened during Operation Epic Fury and involved two aircraft in friendly airspace, with no enemy or friendly fire to blame, according to the Pentagon.

The second plane involved in the crash made it down safely in Israel, but all six on Simmons’ tanker didn’t make it.

“Just the worst nightmare we could ever imagine. We trust in God that he will comfort us and be with our family,” said Simmons’ cousin, Stephan Douglas, to NBC4. “We believe this could have been prevented. It’s a sad day.”

Douglas also said, “We didn’t need to be in this war,” and that, “this is uncalled for, and this is what we get,” he said.

Simmons’ grandmother, Bernice Smith, echoed a similar sentiment to the local news. “Families are suffering right now,” she said. “Just to create a war because you want to create a war is not right.”

Ohio Gov. DeWine ordered flags at half-staff. The war, launched by Trump in coordination with Israel, began on Feb. 28 without congressional approval. As of this week, 13 servicemembers have died, and more than 140 people have been injured.
