Former Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise debut at the 2025 Met Gala on May 5, embracing the event's theme, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." Accompanied by her husband, Doug Emhoff, Harris attended the New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art gala, marking her first appearance at this high-profile fashion event.

Harris wore a custom black-and-white gown designed by Off-White's creative director, IB Kamara. Kamara described the design as reflecting Harris's strength and confidence, qualities central to the theme's focus on Black dandyism and tailored style.

The Met Gala's theme this year was inspired by Monica L. Miller's book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, which celebrates the influence of Black culture on fashion. Notable figures, including Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour, co-chaired the event, with LeBron James serving as honorary chair.

Harris's appearance at the Met Gala comes amid speculation about her political future. Discussions have focused on potential runs for California governor in 2026 or a presidential bid in 2028. She has indicated plans to decide on her next steps by the end of summer 2025.

While her presence at the gala was praised by many, it also sparked criticism from some quarters. Critics pointed to her recent visit to New York City's upscale Polo Bar, accompanied by a significant security detail, as an example of elitism and being out of touch with everyday Americans. 

Despite the criticism, Harris has referenced the importance of the event and why its dedication to the uplifting of art is for the greater good of society. 

“Art has always had a significant impact on not just culture, but also our policies and politics. Artistic expression—whether it’s dance, music, visual arts, or fashion—has a way of capturing the mood and language of the people without words," Harris said in a statement to Vogue, adding, "Art has the power to shape the conversation about where we are today and where we need to go.”
