Larry Wilmore on Obesity: 'Are You Gonna Finish That?'

The Nightly Show host dives into America's #1 health problem.

On last night's Nightly Show, Larry Wilmore tackled a problem that affects nearly a third of the people in America: obesity. Before diving into whether or not the country has an obesity bias, Wilmore shared a frightening statistic — that a third of Americans are obese. That number, he says, "depressed me more than a kid telling me he was dead in a Super Bowl commercial."
"It's a vicious soul cycle of injustice," Wilmore said, asking whether or not obesity is becoming its own civil rights issue. "It's tough being overweight in today's society; magazines, television and movies are full of images of thin people having good stuff happen to them," he continued, pointing out that statistics show that obese women are paid less on the job and more likely to be fired than average-sized women.
"I mean even if you go to church you see a P90x version of Jesus on the cross. I mean, talk about CrossFit," he joked.
Wilmore got more serious when he played a clip of Rep. Peter King (R-NY) saying that if Eric Garner hadn't been obese, he would not have died after being choked by an NYPD officer. "Wow, wow," said an incredulous Wilmore. "I'm not sure if obesity is a civil rights issue, but the way we're treating obese people? It's just not right."
