More Than 100 Dead After Roof Collapses at Dominican Republic Nightclub
A tragic incident unfolded in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, when the roof of the Jet Set nightclub collapsed during a merengue concert, resulting in the deaths of at least 113 individuals and injuring over 150 others, according to NBC News. The disaster occurred around 12:44 a.m. on April 8, 2025, as renowned merengue singer Rubby Pérez performed.
Among the deceased were notable figures such as former Major League Baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco, and Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Monte Cristi Province and sister of MLB player Nelson Cruz. Pérez, who was on stage at the time, also lost his life in the collapse.
"His energy, positivity and zest for life were infectious to all who had the pleasure of knowing him," Dotel’s agent, Dan Horwits, said in a statement Tuesday. "We pass along our thoughts and prayers to his entire family as well as everyone affected by the tragedy."
Eyewitnesses described the harrowing moments leading up to the collapse, noting that the roof gave way without warning approximately an hour into the performance. Emergency responders worked tirelessly to rescue survivors from the debris, with over 138 individuals being transported to nearby medical facilities. More information is forthcoming.
"We don’t have any news," a family member said, per the outlet. We don’t know anything yet. We don’t know anything about where they could be yet." He added, "We just hope they’re at a hospital so we can see them again.”
The cause of the structural failure remains under investigation. Jet Set nightclub's management has pledged full cooperation with authorities to determine the factors that led to this catastrophe.
President Luis Abinader declared three days of national mourning in response to the tragedy. He emphasized that all government resources are being utilized to support the ongoing rescue and recovery efforts.
"What happened has been devastating for everyone. We want you to know that we are with you and that we share your anguish," the club said in a translated statement. "As the Jet Set family, we are with you. To you, mothers, fathers, siblings, children, and loved ones of those affected: you can count on us."
The nation mourns the loss of lives and extends condolences to the families affected by this devastating event.
