BET Awards 2021: Celebs Who Took A Parent As Their Plus One
When Saweetie hit the red carpet at the BET Awards 2021 last Sunday, her plus one turned heads just as much as her stunning Dolce and Gabbana look. Her mystery date was none other than her father, former college football player Johnny Harper.
When a nominated celebs bring a parent as their date to an awards show, it makes for a sweet, sometimes iconic, moment. It’s also another way that stars can thank the ones who supported and loved them way before they became bold-faced names. This year’s red carpet was no different, with multiple celebs serving alongside their mother or father. Some of these celebs even brought their parent onstage with them to receive their trophys. Saweetie and her Pops
"Best Female Hip Hop Artist" nominee Saweetie is known for having a family full of beautiful people, and her father, Johnny Harper, is no exception. Harper is a former defensive back for San Jose State’s football team. This past Valentine’s Day, the rapper posted a pic of her dad with the caption, “My first Valentine.” Another of her beautiful family members, her cousin Gabrielle Union, commented on the post saying “Awwww my guy.”
Queen Latifah And Her Father
Queen Latifah was not alone when she took the stage to receive her "BET Lifetime Achievement Award." She brought along her father, Lancelot Owens, Sr., who was her plus one. Owens, Sr. stood on stage next to her as Latifah gave her acceptance speech. Latifah also held up a picture of her mother, Rita Owens, who passed away two years ago as she accepted her honors.
The City Girls' Yung Miami and her Mom
Both members of the ‘Best Group’ nominee City Girls brought their own dates to the awards. After posing with her groupmate JT, Yung Miami walked the red carpet with her mother, Keenya Young. The mother and daughter were reunited earlier this year when Young was released from prison in March.
Michael Epps and Mom
The Chi actor Michael Epps did not walk his first-ever BET Awards red carpet alone. The "YoungStars Award" nominee brought along his mother, Keisha Johnson, is her son’s manager, and an actress-singer herself. She appeared on a 2020 episode of the NBC series Chicago Fire.
Jazmine Sullivan and Mother
Jazmine Sullivan also brought her parental plus one, Pam Sullivan, onstage when she accepted her award for "Album of the Year." She began her acceptance speech by honoring her mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago and is now in remission. “This is my prize, this is my gift," she said. "It means more to me than anything that she’s here with me. She’s supported me all my life, pushed me, and loved me all my life. So I’m so grateful for her."
BURNA BOY AND HIS MOM
"Best International Act," winner Burna Boy brought his mother and manager, Bose Ogulu onstage for his acceptance speech on awards night. The three-time winner also wasted no time turning the spotlight on her. He began his speech saying, “Thank you to my mom, the most beautiful woman on Earth, who normally would be making this speech for me because I don’t really like talking on the mic if I’m not singing.”
