Rising Philly Rapper LGP Qua Killed in Sunday Shooting
Philadelphia's music community is mourning the loss of rapper LGP Qua, born Qidere Johnson, who was fatally shot on Sunday, May 11, 2025, in the city's Juniata Park neighborhood, according to reports. The 30-year-old artist was known for his socially conscious lyrics and community activism.
Reportedly, the incident occurred shortly before 4:40 p.m. near the intersection of M and East Luzerne Streets. According to police reports, Johnson and a friend were approached by two masked, armed men who attempted to rob them, targeting Johnson's gold chains. During the confrontation, Johnson was shot once in the chest. His friend transported him to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:56 p.m.
LGP Qua gained prominence through viral freestyle videos that addressed issues like gun violence, poverty, and systemic inequality. His music resonated with many for its raw depiction of life in Philadelphia's under-resourced neighborhoods. He collaborated with artists such as will.i.am and French Montana, and was recognized by the Philadelphia City Council for his philanthropic efforts, including donating nearly 1,000 pairs of shoes to local students.
Community activist Ameer Barber described Johnson as someone who "exemplified what a lot of the kids in Philly really feel and he displayed it through music."
