Exclusive: John Singleton Visited James 'Jimmy Henchman' Rosemond in Prison

Is a possible biopic in the works?

John Singleton made headlines when he bowed out of the long-awaited biopic on Tupac Shakur last year, but it looks like he might have another true-life story in the works.
A source close to the filmmaker tells BET.com exclusively that he paid a visit to controversial hip-hop entrepreneur James "Jimmy Henchman" Rosemond in prison on Thursday (July 20), presumably to discuss a film project.

Rosemond is a notorious figure in hip-hop. He is currently serving six back-to-back life sentences while waiting for a retrial on murder-for-hire allegations. Our source tells us that Rosemond's retrial will begin on November 6, though given the multiple indictments he faced, it's not clear if a successful retrial will get him out of prison.

Jimmy Henchman has been a part of music industry folklore for the better part of two decades, so it's no surprise that a biopic is in the works (especially given the success of films like Straight Outta Compton and All Eyez on Me). Singleton would be a perfect fit for the project, given his personal relationship with Rosemond and his ties to the music industry. Indeed, with this film, we would get a chance to see the 90s hip hop era and the East Coast vs. West Coast war through Singleton's unique perspective — something we never had a chance to do once he parted ways with the Tupac biopic project.
If this film bears out, it will be an interesting one indeed.
See Singleton talk working with Michael Jackson on The Real, above.
