Born Daniel Hernandez, the 23-year-old transformed from an ordinary Brooklyn boy into one of hip-hop’s most polarizing acts. That reality came shattering down after Tekashi was arrested in November 2018 and subsequently pleaded guilty to nine federal counts including racketeering, drug trafficking and weapons possession one year later. A whirlwind three-month-long trial followed wherein Tekashi’s street-code betrayal went public after he testified against several members of the Nine Trey Blood gang faction, branding him a pariah in hip-hop.

Ultimately, he was sentenced to 24 months in prison despite his cooperation with the authorities. But Tekashi’s case has since become a far-reaching spectacle for pop culture. Hence, his story is set to be encapsulated in an eight-part documentary podcast series, Infamous: The Tekashi 6ix9ine Story. Complex and Spotify previously unveiled the joint project just a few days after Tekashi’s trial concluded in December of 2019, teasing a deep look into the rise and fall of “2018’s biggest rapper.” Ahead of the project’s roll-out, a brand-new trailer for the podcast series arrived on Thursday (Jan. 23), narrated by the Voice of New York herself: Angie Martinez.  

“Tekashi 6ix9ine came out of nowhere to become 2018’s biggest new rapper. One day, he’s Danny Hernandez, a young kid making sandwiches in Bushwick. The next, everybody knew his trademark tattoos and rainbow hair,” Martinez intones in the three-minute preview. “Only one year later, he became something else: hip-hop’s most infamous cooperating witness.”

According to Complex, a new episode will consecutively drop every Tuesday for eight weeks straight and feature interviews from those who knew Tekashi most intimately. Infamous: The Tekashi 6ix9ine Story will premiere on Spotify on January 28.
