2025 NAACP Image Awards: Kamala Harris Receives Chairman's Award, Reminds Audience We Have a Fight Ahead

This accolade recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional public service and have utilized their platforms to effect meaningful change. Past recipients include notable figures such as former President Barack Obama, the late Congressman John Lewis, and actor Samuel L. Jackson.

In her acceptance speech, Harris expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating, "As a proud lifetime member of the NAACP, I thank everyone for your tireless advocacy." She reflected on her upbringing and the influence of the NAACP, noting, "I grew up inspired by the work of the NAACP, inspired by all those who took up the fight for justice, for equality, and for opportunity." Harris emphasized the urgency of continued activism, quoting W.E.B. Du Bois: "It is today that our best work can be done and not some future day or future year." She called for vigilance in the pursuit of liberty, stating, "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty... to stay alert, to seek the truth, and to actively participate in the fight for America's future."

Harris also addressed the challenges facing the nation, acknowledging feelings of uncertainty but urging collective action: "Some see the flames on our horizons... and ask, what do we do now? But we know exactly what to do because we have done it before and we will do it again." She highlighted the power of community and faith, asserting, "Our strength flows from our faith in God, faith in each other, and our refusal to surrender to cynicism and destruction."

The event served as a reminder of the power of resilience, representation, and the relentless pursuit of equality.

Harris's journey is marked by a series of groundbreaking accomplishments. Born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, she is the daughter of Shyamala Gopalan, a biomedical scientist from India, and Donald Harris, an economist from Jamaica. Harris earned her undergraduate degree from Howard University and a law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office before becoming the District Attorney of San Francisco in 2004. In 2010, she was elected as California's Attorney General, and in 2016, she became the second African American woman elected to the U.S. Senate. In 2020, Harris made history as the first woman and the first person of African and South Asian descent to be elected Vice President of the United States.

Throughout her career, Harris has been a staunch advocate for civil rights, criminal justice reform, and social equity. Her recognition at the NAACP Image Awards underscores her enduring commitment to these causes and her role as a trailblazer in American politics.
