An incident involving an Ohio girl whose hair was allegedly chopped off by her father and stepmother has resulted in the suspension of two volunteer firefighters and an investigation of possible child abuse.  

Christin Johnson said in a Facebook post that she booked an appointment at a hair salon for her daughter, Kelsey, to get highlights as a birthday gift. Kelsey’s father, who is no longer with Johnson, reportedly disapproved of her new hair and decided to make a drastic change.

After Kelsey returned from spending the weekend with her father and stepmother on Jan. 28, her mother saw her hair had been chopped off and she was visibly upset.

Johnson snapped before and after images of Kelsey and posted a lengthy rant to Facebook.

"This is what my daughter looked like on Sunday when I took her home and the other two pics is what happened today before she was brought to me … all over me having highlights put in her hair for her birthday!" Johnson wrote on Facebook.

Johnson alleged that Kelsey's father and stepmother cut the child's hair as a form of punishment. Kelsey’s father and stepmother are both volunteer firefighters.

After the photos went viral, Haskins Police and Wood County Children's Services have opened an investigation into a possible child abuse complaint, according to Fox 8.

"I've been doing this since '92 and I've never had a case I would say that's like this," Police Chief Colby Carroll told the outlet. "Mom was upset with how her child was being cared for — lack of better terms."

Additionally, Middleton Township Fire Chief Steve Asmus confirmed that both the stepmother and father will remain on leave from the fire department pending the outcome of the investigation.

Both the father and stepfather have been on staff for around two years and have never had a complaint filed against them, Asmus told Fox 8.
