BET Awards 2022: Young Dolph and Key Glock Put Memphis on the Map with These Classic Bangers
Hip hop lost a piece of itself when rapper Young Dolph was tragically gunned down in his hometown of Memphis, TN, but the rapper’s legacy lives on through his contributions to the music industry. Though he may not be with us, we’re celebrating his life and music ahead of the BET Awards 2022, where the late star earned a nomination for “Best Group” alongside fellow rapper and cousin Key Glock. So as we draw close to this year’s ceremony hosted by actress Taraji P. Henson, let’s take a look back at some of the hottest tracks from Young Dolph and Key Glock that put their city on the map.
“Water on Water on Water”
Dolph’s lyricism is relentless in this 2019 track with his cousin Glock off their collaborative effort Dum and Dummer.
“Major”
Released as the lead single from his fourth studio album, Role Model, “Major” finds Dolph rapping about going from rags to riches and becoming a successful emcee. At the same time, Glock uses his verse to honor his record label Paper Route Empire.
In an interview with Hot New Hip Hop, producer Bandplay revealed the record was initially supposed to be a solo project for Glock. However, both emcees recorded on the beat, and he ultimately made it a joint effort.
“Ill”
“Ill” is one of the two singles spawned from their 2019 album Dum and Dummer. It’s one of many songs that best showcased Dolph’s contributions to the Memphis rap scene.
“Aspen”
“Aspen” is among many standout tracks from the rapper’s collaborative LP Dum and Dummer 2. Co-written, the single peaked at number 29 on the Billboard’s Mainstream R&B/Hip Hop chart.
“Penguins”
“Penguins,” another term for jewelry or “ice,” is the fourth single from their Dum and Dummer 2 mixtape. The duo has no issue bragging about their collection of pricey accessories. The visual even featured complementary Rolls-Royces and Glock Jewelry collections.
Tune in to the BET Awards 2022 Sunday, June 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on BET.
