Twin Sisters Launch Camp Legacy, a Summer Sanctuary for Black Youth in California

The camp will take place June 20–22, designed to nurture identity, leadership, and community among Black youth.

In the heart of Northern California's serene landscapes, twin sisters Alex and Angelica Young brought a long-held vision to life: Camp Legacy, an overnight summer camp explicitly tailored for Black youth. Set to take place from June 20th to 22nd, this initiative aims to provide a transformative experience where campers can embrace the outdoors, build meaningful connections, and celebrate their cultural identity.

Alex and Angelica, both graduates of Oral Roberts University—Alex with a degree in Psychology and Angelica in Business Administration—have dedicated over a decade to working with Black and Brown youth in public charter schools across Sacramento and the Bay Area.

Their extensive experience revealed a significant gap in accessible outdoor recreational opportunities for Black children, inspiring them to establish Young Legacies, Inc. and Camp Legacy.

"Our mission is to provide a traditional summer camp experience where Black youth can expand their comfort zones, develop dynamic friendships, and embrace the outdoors," the sisters shared on their organization's website. "We envision a world where Black youth are culturally aware, confident in their potential, and curious about the natural world around them."

Camp Legacy is more than just a getaway; it's a culturally affirming space designed to counteract the historical underrepresentation of Black individuals in traditional summer camps. According to the Young Legacies website, less than 10% of overnight summer camp attendees in America identify as Black, a statistic the sisters are determined to change.

By creating an environment where campers share common backgrounds and experiences, Camp Legacy fosters a sense of belonging and encourages participants to tackle new challenges with confidence. Activities range from archery and arts and crafts to group games and night hikes, all aimed at promoting independence and resilience.

While the upcoming camp session is hosted at YMCA Camp Campbell, the sisters have ambitious plans. They are working towards building a permanent summer camp facility on 43 acres of land in Northern California, ensuring that Camp Legacy becomes a longstanding institution for Black youth empowerment.

As Alex and Angelica continue to champion outdoor accessibility and cultural affirmation, Camp Legacy is a testament to their unwavering commitment to nurturing the next generation of Black leaders, thinkers, and innovators.
