Exclusive: Viola Davis Reveals Details on Her Upcoming Role as Harriet Tubman

This is not what you may expect.

Viola Davis is not stopping at Suicide Squad — her next major role is set to be one for the history books. She is starring as abolitionist and activist Harriet Tubman in an upcoming film about her life. Speaking exclusively with on what to expect from the movie, Davis revealed that this is not your average life story.

"I just read this latest draft, which is fantasticm," she said. "This takes place after her career in terms of taking slaves to freedom. This is her older years. This is when she fights in the Combahee River Raid which she was instrumantal [in]. The only woman who has ever led a military raid, and that's where we kind of meet her."

She continues, saying viewers will see a side of Tubman that was crutial to her formation as a Civil Rights leader and humanitarian.

"We meet her when she's redefining herself, and it's like I told Kirk Ellis, I don't want you to write the hero. I want you to write Harriet. I think in writing Harriet, people will discover the hero because she would probably be classified as someone who looked ordinary who let an extraordinary life. I think that's her power."
