Laurel Vs. Yanny Audio Debate Is Tearing Apart Friends And Families So Here’s The RIGHT Word

RIP to anyone who can hear both.

There's a new gold/white v. black/blue dress debate on social media and this time it comes in the form of an audio recording.

A viral audio clip has people divided on whether they hear "laurel" or "yanny." Although scientific analysis proved which word is correct, many are ready to square up based on what they think they hear.

  • Do you hear Laurel or Yanny?

  • Just to be safe, here's a second posting of the recording

  • The viral recording had offices everywhere choosing sides

  • Some are 100% sure it's Yanny, while others of course hear Laurel

  • If you can hear both, you should just see yourself out

  • After much debate, audio engineers played around with the frequencies and discovered the actual word is...Laurel

Brad Story a professor of speech, language and hearing sciences at the University of Arizona, made two spectrograms of the voice recording. In the first waveform, which is of the actual recording, there are primary acoustic features of the “l” and “r” sounds. Thus, Story believes the word is actually "laurel."

Britt Yazel, a researcher at the UC Davis Center for Mind and Brain, agreed with Story's findings after looking at the waveforms.

"I honestly think after looking at the spectrograms and playing with some filters that this is just the word 'Laurel' with some high frequency artifacts overlaying it," he told PopSci.

  • However, that won't stop people from risking it all to prove otherwise
