NFL Issues Statement After Viral Palestine-Sudan Flag Protest at Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Performance

The league clarified that the protest during the Grammy winner’s performance was unplanned.

The National Football League has issued an official statement after a dancer waved a flag featuring the colors and names of Palestine and Sudan during Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show performance on Sunday (Feb. 9).

In its statement Monday morning, the NFL addressed the situation, confirming that the individual was part of the official field cast but acted independently.

“We commend security for quickly detaining the individual who displayed the flag. He was a part of the 400-member field cast,” the league said in a statement.

The organization also clarified that the stunt was neither planned nor sanctioned by Lamar or the show’s production team. “The individual hid the item on his possession and unveiled it late in the show,” the statement read. “No one involved with the production was aware of the individual’s intent.”

In the widely circulated clip, the unidentified dancer is seen standing atop the GNX car used in Lamar’s set, raising the flag with “Gaza” and “Sudan” boldly painted across the fabric.
Security reacted swiftly. As the protester leaped from the elevated platform, he ran among the 400 field dancers for nearly 20 seconds before being tackled and removed. The league later confirmed that the individual has been banned for life from all NFL stadiums and events.

The incident comes amid heightened political tensions, with former President Donald Trump recently suggesting a controversial U.S. plan to "take over" Gaza.

When asked about the proposal on Friday (Feb. 7), Trump told reporters that Israel would “give” Gaza to the U.S. and claimed his idea to assume control of the region—currently under Hamas governance—has been “very well received.”
