Seven Times Lizzo Absolutely Slayed From Social Media To The Stage

The groundbreaking singer-songwriter turns 35 years old today.

In honor of Lizzo's 35th birthday, we are celebrating the reigning queen of unapologetic pop.

The four-time Grammy winner is not just a pop star, she is a movement. Her innovative sound is a fusion of multiple genres, including hip-hop, pop, soul, and funk. Her lyrics focus on empowerment, and body positivity, with hit songs like  "Good as Hell" and "Truth Hurts" becoming anthems for those seeking to love themselves unconditionally. She has not only entertained but also inspired many people to embrace themselves, irrespective of their body size or the haters.

Through her music, fashion, and advocacy, Lizzo has become a role model for those seeking to live their lives authentically and confidently. Here are five moments that show why Lizzo is always good as hell.

  1. Lizzo Takes A Stand In Tennessee

As Tennessee is waging a political war on drag queens, Lizzo is celebrating the art form, which has existed for centuries. During a recent show in Knoxville, Tennessee, Lizzo brought out 20 drag queens on stage. According to CBS News, Lizzo told the audience, "In light of recent and tragic events, I was told by people on the internet, 'Cancel your shows in Tennessee. Don't go to Tennessee.'" She continued, "Their reason was valid, but why would I not come to the people who need to hear this message the most? The people who need to feel this release the most?"

She also posted a clip on her Instagram with the caption, "Thank you to these beautiful drag queens for showing their pride in Tennessee." See above.

  2. Unbothered By The Haters

After deeply offensive comments from the artist formerly known as Kanye West said about Lizzo's weight during an interview with Tucker Carlson at FOX News, the Grammy winner had the perfect response. During an October 2022 performance at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Lizzo told the crowd, "I feel like everybody in America got my motherfu**ing name in their motherfu**ing mouth for no motherfu**ing reason." She added, "I'm minding my fat Black beautiful business."

  3. An Advocate For Mental Health

In May 2021, Lizzo became extremely vulnerable when talking about mental health in TikTok, opening up about "sadness where you feel like a burden." After an outpour of love from fans, Lizzo responded with another video, "I’m feeling better. I had a really rough night and a very emotional morning just thinking about my relationships and life and you know how it is. It gets dark. I'm definitely glad I reached out in any way that I could and TikTok was one of those ways and to feel received and seen and heard really helped me. I’m not crying anymore." The singer encouraged everyone to use their self-care "tools" in the caption where she addressed that she's also "talking to my therapist today."

  5. Yitty

Lizzo's advocacy around body positivity is not just talk. In March 2022, she launched a size-inclusive shapewear line called Yitty, which was her childhood nickname. The new line is described as "a revolutionary shapewear brand" that exudes "self-love, radical inner confidence, and effortless, everyday wear," according to a press release for the brand shared with PEOPLE. Images depicted a colorful line of bodysuits, sports bras, tanks and other pieces sized from XS to 6X.

"Instead of thinking about size in this linear way, we're thinking about it on a spectrum where everyone is included. Everyone's size is just their size. It's not high, it's not low. It's not big, it's not small. It's just your size," Lizzo told PEOPLE. See some of the images above.

  6. 2022 BET Awards

At last year's BET Awards, Lizzo brought the house down with a stunning rendition of her hit “About Damn Time." This was days after announcing she was donating $1,000,000 to Planned Parenthood in the wake of the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court. Watch the epic performance above.

  7. 2022 VMAs

After disgusting comments about Lizzo from comedian Aries Spears, she continued to shine. In August 2022, she won the Video for Good category at the MTV Video Music Awards. While people wanted her to clap back at Spears, Lizzo responded like only she can, “And now, to the b**** that got something to say about me in the press," which was a famous line Nicki Minaj said to Miley Cyrus at the VMAs.

She continued, “They be like, ‘Lizzo, why don’t you say something?? Why don’t you clap back? Why don’t you clap back?’ Because, b***, I’m winning!” Lizzo proudly held up her moon man award and pumped off the stage.

  9. Making History

While Lizzo is an incredible dancer, singer and performer, she is also a classically trained flutist. In September, she made history when she accepted an invitation from the Library of Congress to play a 200-year-old flute that was once given to former President James Madison. The flute is believed to be one of the few things first lady Dolly Madison saved after British troops set fire to the White House in 1814. Lizzo was the first person to ever play the instrument during a performance.

The flute was borrowed from the Library of Congress, see above.
