From hometown proclamations to fashion power moves and viral R&B moments, this week delivered culture, luxury, and legacy.

This week in Black news felt like a masterclass in range from hometown pride, generational influence, luxury love stories, and R&B excellence all unfolding in real time.

Atlanta gave one of its own his long-overdue flowers, officially declaring February 12 “Kenan Thompson Day,” reminding the world that even when you leave home, home never leaves you.

Meanwhile, A$AP Rocky continues expanding his creative empire, unveiling his first all-metal eyewear collection as Creative Director of Ray-Ban, tapping Nas for a cinematic campaign that bridges hip-hop legacy with modern design. It’s fashion, but it’s also cultural alignment.

On the softer side of the spotlight, Megan Thee Stallion celebrated her birthday with a powder-blue Bentley surprise from Klay Thompson, blending romance and luxury in true Hot Girl fashion. And over All-Star Weekend, Brandy and June’s Diary transformed the national anthem into an intimate R&B moment, reminding audiences that soul still moves the room.

Let's get into this week's stories ahead of the weekend.

  • Atlanta Declares February 12 “Kenan Thompson Day”

Atlanta made it official: February 12 is now “Kenan Thompson Day,” honoring the Saturday Night Live legend for his three-decade impact on comedy, television, film, and children’s literature, according to The Atlanta Voice.

At Retreat by The Gathering Spot, Thompson received proclamations from both the City of Atlanta and Fulton County.

City Councilmember Eshe Collins formally delivered the city’s declaration, celebrating his College Park roots and the institutions that helped shape his rise before becoming the longest-tenured cast member in SNL history.

“It feels monumental,” Thompson said, noting that while he hasn’t lived in Atlanta since high school, he’s “done nothing but represent” the city. Organized by entertainment executive Shanti Das, the ceremony served as a powerful hometown reminder: one of comedy’s most consistent forces has always been Atlanta’s proud son.

  • A$AP Rocky Taps Nas for Ray-Ban ‘New Metal’ Collection

One year into his role as Creative Director at Ray-Ban, A$AP Rocky is stepping into his design era with the debut of the brand’s all-metal “New Metal” optical and sun collection, including his first-ever optical designs.

Drawing from classic Ray-Ban silhouettes across decades, the assortment reimagines bold wire frames and rimless constructions through oval curves, narrow rectangles, and ultra-minimal metal detailing. The drop includes refined optical styles, sharp rectangular and oval sunglasses, plus an exclusive wraparound silhouette available in select stores.

The campaign stars Rocky alongside Nas in a cinematic late-night New York diner setting.

The collection, priced between $202–$249, will be available on Ray-Ban.com, in Ray-Ban stores, and at select EssilorLuxottica retail locations.

  • Megan Thee Stallion Scores Powder-Blue Bentley From Boyfriend Klay Thompson

Megan Thee Stallion celebrated her 31st birthday in style and in wheels.

As she shared in an Instagram carousel recap of her tropical getaway, her boyfriend Klay Thompson surprised her with a custom powder-blue Bentley wrapped in a bow, leaving fans “gagged” at the luxe reveal.

The posts show Megan posing with the car keys and the striking ride, alongside scenes from their beach festivities, including an intimate picnic and seaside strolls.

  • Brandy & June’s Diary Turn the National Anthem Into an R&B Moment

Brandy and vocal group June’s Diary delivered one of the most talked-about performances of NBA All-Star Weekend, transforming “The Star-Spangled Banner” into a lush, harmony-driven anthem.

The duo offered a layered, acappella rendition of the national anthem at the 2026 NBA All-Star Game pre-game festivities, leaning into tight vocal arrangements and Brandy’s signature tone instead of traditional orchestration.

The unique R&B-rooted treatment quickly became one of the weekend’s standout clips, shared widely across social platforms and praised for its soulful reinterpretation of a familiar song.
