Black Transgender Woman Found Fatally Beaten To Death In Chicago Garbage Bin
After being missing for five days, the body of Tatiana Labelle, a Black transgender woman, was found in a Chicago garbage bin.
According to authorities, Labelle was found beaten to death in an alley.
An unidentified neighbor said, "Once the garbage people pulled it up and the garbage flipped over, and everything fell out… I automatically knew then, too, that it was dropped over here. The incident didn't happen right here. It didn't. It couldn't have,” reports WLS.
Labelle’s body was reportedly found five days after her family reported her missing.
"It is heartbreaking for someone to beat her to death and throw her in the trash like she was garbage," her sister, Shameika Thomas, told WLS. "I loved my sister whether she was transgender or not, and I would like for me and my family to have justice."
According to the Human Rights Campaign, Labelle’s murder adds to a growing list of trans people. A record 47 transgender people were killed last year in the U.S., five of which were in the Windy City.
"Tatiana, Tee-Tee, will be the seventh confirmed reported trans person that was murdered this year," Iggy Ladden, director of the Chicago Therapy Collective, said according to WLS.
Ladden also adds that the number of trans people killed is actually likely much higher because the crimes are severely underreported.
Neighbors say they gave Chicago police security video, but so far no arrests have been made.
