Ohio Woman Charged For Threatening Two Black Michigan State Reps With Violent, Racist Voicemails

‘You’re going to die,’ the woman allegedly said in the messages.

An Ohio woman faces criminal charges after she allegedly made racist and threatening voicemails for two Michigan state representatives – both of whom are Black women.

According to a press release, 58-year-old Sandra Bachman of Batavia, Ohio, allegedly made threats last year against Rep. Cynthia Johnson (D) and Rep. Sarah Anthony (D). If convicted, Bachman faces prison time on the counts of false report or threat of terrorism, ethnic intimidation and telecommunications services - malicious use.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office says Bachman left a threatening voicemail for Anthony in May 2021, during which she allegedly said, “Hay um, need to cancel that bill against the vets, you little traitor. And, um, you won’t see the bullet coming, let me tell you that. So, stop this sh*t and you’re fired. We’ll be coming to Michigan soon to remove you from your post.”

The following month, Bachman is accused of leaving a threatening voicemail for Johnson that included racial slurs.

“[W]e are going to get you,” Bachman allegedly said after saying at least two racial slurs for Black people. “You will die. You are one of the worst offenders. We actually have a tier too, in like points for how much you are worth once we kill you…. You’re going to die and I’m happy about it. The whole world will be rejoicing, just know that. Sleep well.”

According to the Detroit Free Press, Bachman also allegedly made a threatening call against Democratic California Rep. Maxine Waters.

Michigan State Police reportedly referred the incidents to the AG’s office for investigation after they did their own investigation, according to Nessel.

“This rise in threats against elected officials will not be tolerated,” Nessel said. “Those who think hiding behind a phone or keyboard will prevent them from facing criminal charges are severely mistaken. I appreciate the work done across state lines to bring accountability in this case.”
