Tell ‘Em, Sis: Mo’Nique Claps Back At Rebel Wilson For Erasing Her Out Of Movie History
When it comes to fighting for what’s rightfully hers or clapping back at those who don’t understand, Mo’Nique remains classy above all.
Most recently, she decided to swoop in on a topic all-too relevant to her. You see, Rebel Wilson recently claimed that she was the first plus-size woman to ever star in a romantic comedy. Well, that’s whitewashing history a little bit, something Hollywood isn’t unfamiliar with.
While on the Ellen DeGeneres Show to promote her new movie Isn’t It Romantic, Wilson gave herself credit that she probably shouldn’t have. Mo’Nique, who starred as a lead in Phat Girlz, stepped in.
“Hey my sweet sister,” she tweeted. “Let’s please not allow this business to erase our talent with giving grey areas and technicalities. Take a moment and know the history. DON’T BE A PART OF ERASING IT. I wish you the best.”
The comment was in response to a Twitter user’s initial tweet about Wilson not being the first woman, to which the actress replied, “Hey girl! Yeah I of course know of these movies but it was questionable as to whether: 1. Technically those actresses were plus size when filming those movies or 2. Technically those films are catorgorized/billed as a studio rom-com with a sole lead. So there’s a slight grey area.”
Queen Latifah has lead in the rom-coms Just Wright and Last Holiday, and Ricki Lake has also played the lead role in the TV rom-com movie Babycakes.

Congrats to Rebel Wilson for her new role and success. Not trying to take anything away from that. Still though: gotta acknowledge the history.
