7 Jill Scott Hits That Prove Why She's A Lady of Soul
In honor of the upcoming 2021 Soul Train Awards ceremony, we’re taking a look back at some of the honorees of the “Lady of Soul” award that make this genre what it is today.
In 2015, Jill Scott not only won several of the top honors, but she became the show’s first ever “Lady of Soul" recipient. She was given the inaugural prize recognizing her longstanding presence in the industry and influence on the world of music.
Since then, Scott has continued to contribute and influence the sound, one song at a time. Join us as we take a look back at some of the classic hits from our first-ever “Lady of Soul.”
"Golden"
There are so many songs that come to mind when we think of some of Scott’s classic hits, but this 2004 anthem definitely makes it at the top of the class. The track reminds us to always live your life like it’s “golden, golden.”
"Blessed"
Call it the sequel to her 2007 hit “Golden” if you must, but in this 2012 song, Scott sings about the things she’s grateful for in life, because although there may be rough moments—because that’s just how life works---just don’t forget to also reflect on the good.
"So Gone (What My Mind Says)"
The heart, or should we say, the body, wants what it wants and in this little number, featuring a guest appearance from rapper Paul Wall, Scott is clear about her intentions.

"A Long Walk"
For many, this drop from Scott’s debut album Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1, may have been the first time we fell in love with the songbird from Philly. Whether you’re cleaning, hanging out with friends, or taking a stroll down the block, this song is right for any occasion.
"Hear My Call"
Off her No. 1 album The Light of the Sun, Scott delivers one of her most emotionally packed songs yet. Struggling to find her way, Scott calls on a greater power for strength and assistance. The visual, co-directed by the actress, is just as moving as the lyrics she sings.
“Gettin’ in the Way”
Scott has had enough with her boyfriend’s ex. With quotes such as “He let you go a long time ago, now it’s time to turn him loose…” The Grammy award winner is singing everything we want to say to that pesky little ex.

"Cross My Mind"
In this tune Scott reminisces on an old flame and how her current arrangement just doesn’t suffice. With a mix of a spoken word and an angsty hook, this song earned the songstress her first Grammy win in 2004.
