More than three months have passed since Mexican authorities issued an arrest warrant for a friend of Shanquella Robinson, 25, who was found dead in October while on vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Now, attorneys for Robinson’s family want diplomatic intervention from U.S. officials to extradite the suspect to Mexico so the case could move forward.

The Charlotte Observer reports that civil rights lawyer Ben Crump, co-counsel Sue-Ann Robinson and activists planned to hold a meeting and rally Friday (March 3) in Washington, D.C., to demand action from President Joe Biden and the U.S. State Department.

Mexico and the United States have a history of cooperating on extradition matters, legal analyst Joey Jackson told CNN in November when Mexico announced the arrest warrant for Robinson’s unnamed friend who resided in the United States.

There are options involved regarding which country prosecutes the case.

“On the one hand, you could see Mexico engage in the prosecution. On the other, we certainly have a statute in the United States that would provide for our government to be involved,” Jackson said.

He added, “… In the event that you go overseas and an American citizen is ultimately killed by another American citizen, there’s a statute that could provide for the prosecution to take place in this country.”

After returning from a trip to Mexico, attorney Sue-Ann Robinson, who is not related to Shanquella, told Fox News that the legal team needs U.S. officials to facilitate the suspect’s extradition.

"My understanding of the treaty is that it would be the responsibility of our law enforcement agency to have the approval of the State Department in order for us to give clearance for U.S. citizens to be turned over to the Mexican authorities," Robinson said, adding that Mexican officials told her that their investigation is over and they need the United States to agree to extradite the woman.

Robinson, a Charlotte native, traveled to Mexico with six friends from college – four women and two men. She was discovered unconscious on Oct. 29 in a rented tourist property in San Jose del Cabo, in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. Her family said her friends told them she had died of alcohol poisoning.

However, a video went viral on social media of someone in the traveling party attacking her in a bedroom while she was naked. Conflicting reports from the six friends also raised suspicions about how she died.

In November, Daniel de la Rosa Anaya, attorney general for Baja California Sur, said an arrest warrant was issued for an American friend of Robinson charged with femicide. Investigators determined that there “wasn’t a quarrel, but instead a direct aggression” that resulted in Robinson’s death.
