Beyoncé Donated $6 Million To COVID-19 Relief Efforts
Beyoncé’s BEYGOOD charity has teamed up withTwitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s #startsmall initiative to pledge more than $6 million in COVID-19 relief efforts.
The superstar announced the news in a message posted to her site on Thursday (April 23). A letter underscored how communities of color have been disproportionately impacted by the coronavirus.
“Many families live in underserved areas with homes that make it harder to practice social distancing. Communities that were already lacking funds for education, health, and housing are now faced with alarming infection rates and fatalities,” the letter read. “And these communities lack access to testing and equitable healthcare.”
Through the partnership, part of the $6 million will go toward providing medical services, food supplies, food deliveries in addition to covering basic necessities such as cleaning supplies, medicine, face masks, and personal hygiene items for underserved communities. Additionally, Beyoncé and Dorsey are working with the University of California (UCLA) and National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) to provide mental health services in Detroit, Houston, New York, and New Orleans, who are amongst the cities that are dealing with the worst of the coronavirus.
Most recently, Beyoncé appeared on Global Citizen and World Health Organization’s (WHO) One World: Together broadcast and the Disney Family Singalong. She is the latest to join the growing list of celebrities stepping up to lend support to communities impacted by the global pandemic. YG and Birdman lent a helping hand to their communities earlier this week while Rihanna, Jay-Z, and Dorsey jointly announced a $6.2 million fund for global COVID-19 relief efforts in addition to their previous donations.
