Tuskegee Institute student and civil rights activist Samuel Leamon Younge Jr., a 21-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by a white gas station owner for attempting to use a “Whites Only” restroom in Tuskegee, Alabama.

Twenty-one-year-old Samuel Leamon Younge Jr., a civil rights activist and student of the Tuskegee Institute, was fatally shot by the white owner of a gas station after he tried to use a restroom labeled “Whites Only.” His attacker, Marvin Segrest, would be charged with murder, but would later be acquitted by an all-white jury.
