Post Hip Hop Awards Outlook: What Music To Expect Going Forward
The 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards proved, yet again, to be the biggest night in hip hop, as it included a jammed packed, fun-filled lineup that included the 85 South (DC Young Fly, Karlous Miller, and Chico Bean) as return hosts, Young Thug, Gunna, Bia, Lil Jon, Baby Keem, and Isaiah Rashad as performers and surprise cameos you had to see to believe (just google Nick Cannon).
Just because hip hop winners we’re proclaimed last week doesn’t mean the year in music has ended. With these musical triumphs celebrated, here’s a look at which artists to check out going forward.
Bryson Tiller
Although we haven’t heard from him since his third studio album, Anniversary, last year, Bryson has confirmed to BET in an exclusive interview that he will indeed be dropping a project next month.
“I’m definitely coming out next month with my next new project if all goes well,” he told us in an over a zoom call last week.
Until then, he has a song “Pull Up” with artist T-Docc that’s flames that, along with his last album, should hold you over.
Wale
Wale’s been gearing up for his seventh studio album Folarin 2, which is set to drop Oct. 22. In preparation, the D.C artist has been keeping the temperature warm with the singles, “Angles” with Chris Brown and “Poke It Out” with J. Cole.
Don Toliver
Don Toliver should be someone you keep an eye on for the rest of the year, as the BET Hip Hop Awards “Best New Artist” nominee just released his sophomore studio album Life of a Don just this past week (Oct. 8).
Right now the songs “Xscape” and “Double Standards” are early standouts for the Houston native.

Young Thug
Although Young Thug performed at the BET Hip Hop Awards alongside Gunna, the single in “Ski,” and has performed a set on NPR’s Tiny Desk, the Atlanta rapper has yet to release a solo album this year.
One can say all the gigs have been an elaborate rollout effort for his upcoming album, Punk — Thug’s second studio release since 2019’s So Much Fun, is set to release this year. In the Tiny Desk performance, he revealed even more songs: “Die Slow,” “Droppin Jewels,” and the very punk-infused “Hate the Game.”
Kendrick
Kendrick has been relatively quiet for the better part of the last decade but since appearing on Baby Keem’s “Family Ties” and dropping a personal note declaring his next album will be his last with TDE. With that being said, we shouldn’t be surprised if he dropped the follow-up to his critically acclaimed DAMN. this year.
