Here's Why LeBron James Believes Steph Curry Is Worth $400 Million

Curry recently signed a supermax, $201 million contract extension with the Warriors.

Stephen Curry just made NBA history and signed the richest contract ever, re-upping with the Golden State Warriors for an additional five years and $201 million. Lucky guy, right?

LeBron James seems to be unimpressed. Now, to be clear, the Cleveland Cavaliers forward congratulated Steph initially and believes he earned every cent of the new deal. LeBron’s issue is that he thinks Curry should’ve made even more money through his contract extension.

Taking to Twitter yesterday afternoon (July 1), The King pointed out the profit Steph helped bring into ownership and that he should be sharing more in that wealth.

“So tell me again why there's a cap on how much a player should get?? Don't answer that,” he tweeted. “Steph should be getting 400M this summer 5yrs.”

When you actually do the math, James is correct. Curry’s salary is limited in a couple of key ways. The cap limits how much the Warriors point guard can make – a “soft cap” of $99 million, with various exceptions. A player’s potential earnings are also assigned a maximum value based on their years in the league and other factors.

If not for a salary cap, the Warriors, who have been valuated by Forbes as being worth $2.6 billion, would be willing to pay Stephen Curry a lot more than $40 million per year. In fact, many believe LeBron’s $400 million would be the minimum offered.

In general, it’s hard trying to evaluate how much NBA superstars really bring to the teams and cities where they play. In the case of LeBron James, Cleveland sports mean everything to the Midwestern city and his success with the Cavaliers drive in exponentially larger dollar numbers when he plays for the team.
