Justin Timberlake Added to MTV VMA Performances
Fresh off of revealing the track list for part two of his massive album, The 20/20 Experience, Justin Timberlake is now being added to the performances list for the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. During the evening, JT will also be presented with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award.
The award, which has been given out since 1984, is also known as the Lifetime Achievement Award and was named after the king of pop in 1991. Jackson won in the category in '88 for his impact on music video culture, especially for his acclaimed "Thriller" video, which shifted the visual game from one of merely promotion to an artistic, story-telling genre.
Since then, Janet Jackson has also received the award, as well as LL Cool J, the first rap artist to be given the honor, the Beastie Boys and Madonna. Britney Spears took it home the last time the award was given out — in 2011.
In 2006, Kanye West, who is making rap history with his slated performance this year, presented the award to director Hype Williams, who has been the guiding eye in some of hip hop's biggest videos.
As for Timberlake's personal VMA history, he's so far accumulated 14 awards and is nominated for six this year including Best Collaboration for "Suit & Tie" with Jay Z and Video of the Year for his "Mirrors." And, in addition to Yeezy, he'll be performing on a bill with Robin Thicke, Miley Cyrus (who is now rapping with French Montana), Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.
The MTV VMA's will broadcast live from the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, Sunday, Aug. 25.
Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience: 2 of 2 is set for a Sept. 30 release.
