Box Office: Maze Runner Beats Out Black Mass
Thought the YA craze died with Twilight and The Hunger Games? Think again. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials won the weekend’s box office with a whopping $30.3 million debut.
The sequel, starring Dylan O’Brien and Kaya Scodelario, also won overseas, earning an additional $43.3 million for an early worldwide total of $108.3 million in its first week of release.
Coming in second was Johnny Depp's awards contender Black Mass, also starring Joel Edgerton and Benedict Cumberbatch, which brought in $23.4 million in its first week.
Taking the third spot was M. Night Shyamalan‘s spooky thriller The Visit, which took in an additional $11.3 million for a domestic total of $42.3 million. Rounding out the top five were The Perfect Guy, starring Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy and Morris Chestnut in a deadly love triangle, and faith-based drama War Room, which brought in $9.7 million and $6.3 million, respectively.
In the specialty box office, David Oyelowo and Kate Mara‘s new movie, Captive, grossed a solid $1.5 million in 806 theaters.
Next week, Hotel Transylvania 2 and The Intern will be in theaters near everyone, while LGB-rights drama Stonewall will open in art-house theaters. Watch our interview with Sanaa Lathan talking about her relationship deal breakers (you listening, French?), below:
