It’s that time of year again, folks. This morning (Dec. 7), the Recording Academy announced the nominees for the 2019 Grammy Awards. Fans and artists flooded social media with mixed reactions of excitement, anger and genuine shock.
Don’t be too upset if certain hits from this year didn’t make the cut because the eligibility period spanned from October 1, 2017 until September 30, 2018. Kendrick Lamar is leading the front with eight nominations and his TDE comrades, like R&B soulstress SZA, swept highly coveted categories like Record of the Year and Album of the Year. Budding soulful phenom H.E.R.’s debut eponymous EP was also nominated for Album of the Year, as well as Best New Artist. Drake collected seven nominations and is also in the running for Album of the Year. Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s Everything Is Love are up for three awards: Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best R&B Performance and Best Music Video for “APESH*T.”
Some fans were outraged over Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Eminem not being nominated, but some newcomers (Jorja Smith, Chloe x Halle, Ella Mai) and Bronx baddie Cardi B came out on top and their fans are rejoicing.
Congrats to all the nominees! May the odds be ever in your favor.
