Beyoncé is notoriously private about her creative process and what goes on behind the scenes before she presents a complete package to the general masses. But in a rare moment, Bey gave us all an intimate glimpse into her mind.
The megastar songstress gave an exclusive look into the making of her chart-topping record The Gift in a new ABC special called Beyoncé Presents: Making tthe Gift, which premiered on the network Monday night (Sept. 16).
In the one-hour documentary, Bey delved into the most revelatory behind-the-scenes moments that culminated into the album. Described by Beyoncé as her "love letter to Africa," she walks viewers track-by-track through the album, from conception to completion.
One surprise revelation in particular has left fans with minds blown. When Beyoncé reveals how exactly she came up with the Jay-Z featuring Childish Gambino-assisted hit “MOOD 4 EVA,” her source of inspiration was a twist no one saw coming.
Around the 30-minute mark, a clip from the actual Lion King film itself is overlaid with Donald Glover (who voiced Simba) in a studio singing his rendition of “Hakuna Matata” before it cuts to Bey freestyling lyrics off the top of her head to the song’s beat.
She chants it over and over to herself until she finally reworks the lyrics into “I’m so unbothered.” The scene then switches to Bey alongside Hov putting the final touches on what would become the final version of “MOOD 4 EVA” in a makeshift basement studio. Hov lays down his verses without a beat, which inspires the melody of the song.
“He started rapping. I’m like, ‘OK.’ This melody... that repetition came to my head and we just went back and forth. And it just sparked.” Bey explains in the special before the scene transitions into Snapchat-esque videos of Bey and Blue Ivy having fun singing the lyrics set to snapshots of their trip to Africa.
Fans are still in awe at her musical prowess hours later, and she is reminding everyone to put some respect on her name, impeccable taste, talent and dedication to her craft.
“She really made Mood 4 Eva from Hakuna Matata,” one fan tweeted.
“I need that clip of Bey turning Hakuna Matata into Mood 4 Eva cause that s**t was amazing,” another commented.
