During Kanye West’s IMAX premiere of his Jesus is King film and tease of its accompanying soundscape, fans couldn’t help but notice that the highly-anticipated track, “New Body,” did not feature the Megatron artist and newlywed, Nicki Minaj.
Prior to Ye’s gospel transformation, his now Jesus is King was once Yandhi. The Chicago-bred rapper heavily teased his collaborated song “New Body” with Ty Dolla $ign and Minaj. Minaj sat down with The Shade Room to reveal what happened.
“What’s funny is that I did a song with Kanye, that he now wants to transform into a gospel song,” she said. Later explaining that the new direction of Ye’s album created a back and forth between the two. “I done wrote three different verses chile, and I don’t know. We ain’t seeing eye to eye on it. I don’t know, but of course, I love and respect Kanye and Kim, we’ll see what happens with that.”
According to Complex, “New Body” was supposed to face the issues of slut-shaming and body-shaming, up close and personal. Genius also reports that during an October 2018 TV appearance in Uganda, Yeezy dropped knowledge to explain what the original version was about.
“This concept is a ‘Ye concept. I’m taking two stigmas at once because I love taking stigmas and flipping them to positive. Negative energy to a positive. One of the stigmas is that men, the more people we sleep with the higher our score goes. With a woman, the more people they sleep with, people they sleep with, people consider that to be, the lower their score goes.”
With Kanye now walking a straight and narrow path uplifted by Jesus, the original rendition of the Nicki feature might not fit the bill. But knowing what we do know about the latest gospel guru, fans could hear a brand new version of “New Body” for the ultimate unveiling of Jesus is King.
