Alicia Keys Shares Heart Wrenching Letter She Wrote Her Absent Father At 14

The R&B singer opened up about the hurt she was feeling at the time.

Alicia Keys shared a letter she wrote to her estranged father when she was just a teenager.

  • Although the singer and her father have since mended their relationship, Keys opened up about the place of hurt she was in at that time in her life that spurred her action with her to her 19.2 million followers on Instagram last week. “My words came from a place of vulnerability and longing. At the time it hurt so much to experience what felt like empty promises. I swore I didn’t care, but I did and it affected me deeply. I finally had enough and wrote those words,” the 39-year-old explained in the post’s caption.

  • In 1994, Alicia sent her father, Craig, an untitled letter declaring that she no longer wanted anything to do with him when she was just 14 years old. In the letter, she detailed the emotional anguish and frustration she felt over the lack of her father’s presence in her life growing up, writing “All I want is for you to mind your business. I don’t want the phone calls. I don’t want the letters. I don’t want the fake acts you pull to try and make me think you care. I don’t want anything.”

  • Crazily enough, the “Like You Never See Me Again” songstress revealed that her father had been holding on to the keepsake all this time.

“I was so shocked when he first showed me. It was tucked away in a shoe box full of memories,” Alicia continued in the caption. “I’m glad he and I can look back at it now as a sign of how far we’ve come.”
