Episode after episode the cartoon “Tom and Jerry” portrays the relentless chase of cat, physically dominating feline predator, and mouse, diminutive rodent prey. Although a mouse, Jerry is cunning and charming. Tom, of course, is stronger and larger in size, but disproportionately dimwitted. Without Jerry’s quick-witted performances there would have never been 114+ comical episodes, several spinoffs, and a movie. No matter the obstacle or reward, Jerry usually reigns supreme despite Tom’s exorbitant efforts to get rid of him. Based on the narratives and perspective (directed by either Fred Quimby or Chuck Jones), Jerry is usually minding his business in his tiny studio cubby, helping other tiny animals (baby ducks and chicks), or simply trying to grab a little grub. Yet and still, the ultimate goal of every episode is to dispose of Jerry the Mouse. Jerry’s life does not matter.
It might seem to you like an outlandish analogy, but I feel as if people of color in America are seen as the “rodents” of our own country. We are varying in size, metaphorically speaking in regards to power, and are relentlessly and unjustly being chased out of our homes by the very people that brought us here to begin with. We are preyed on and victimized by dimwits that are disgusted by us; those who feel we serve no substantial purpose. Of course without us, however, there would be no flavorful show. The truth of the matter is all we want is to coexist in this country by minding our own [black-owned] business, helping others, and quite analogously grabbing a little grub. We pose a threat to those that cannot relate to our culture and simultaneously want to appropriate iit. Still in 2017, against all our progress, the goal is to dispose of people of color. Black lives do not matter.
Black Lives DON’T Matter reached a heart-wrenching, jaw dropping reality when my fiancé played a video of Donald Trump at a rally for the Alabama Republican Senate saying ‘to fire any “son of a bitch” who refuses to stand for the National Anthem in protest.’ And is it any surprise that a white man in the highest office of the land referred to the Black mothers of men of color as “bitch.” Yet, I digress. Colin Kaepernick is an NFL player that is famously or infamously recognized for kneeling during the National Anthem at every NFL game. He peacefully protests for the black and brown lives that have been shamelessly and innocently taken by police who don’t get convicted of murder. Additionally, he has encouraged and influenced other players to follow suit. His effort to raise awareness for Black Lives Matter has conjured nationwide notoriety and is constantly debated against on sports networks via television and talk radio. Since Kap began protesting, it has been extremely difficult for him to get signed to another football team. People (read: white people) are taking a large offense to his protest as disrespect for his country (read: a country that disrespects the lives of Black people).
There are so many things wrong with this picture. First of all, how is the American leader… the President of the United States saying “son of a bitch” candidly at a REPUBLICAN RALLY in (not surprised) Alabama? Not on Twitter, not via text to his tribe of children, but to the open public and more specifically his band of merry ‘politically involved’ followers. MOST of all, since we’re in the mood to fire people, why not begin by firing the many police officials that have taken so many of our innocent black men and women, and children from us just because of the color of their skin? I didn’t realize that murder constitutes more of a second chance than peacefully kneeling to support a principle of your own rather than the oppressive principles being forced on us.
Lastly, forgive me if I’m wrong but the general consensus of the fans in the crowds of these NFL games is, they do not give a SHIT (excuse my American) about the National Anthem. The stadium doesn’t actually stop when the National Anthem is being sang. Beer is still being served, hats are still on, and merch is still being sold. StuGotz made a valid point in a debate about Kap’s protesting. If you glance around at the stadium there are people talking, texting, folks taking selfies, looking for their seats, kids crying, etc. There is hands down a plethora of, in Trump’s eyes, disrespectful ‘sons of bitches’ (and a lot of them are white) out there not giving a rat’s ass (Tom & Jerry pun intended) about the American Flag waving in the wind. Why are we making a big deal about a Black man protesting for a purpose? Isn’t freedom of speech and expression the American way? Or is it only a right when you’re (a white supremacist man-child) protesting with a tiki torch?
This was yet another scary confirmation: Black Lives don’t matter…to donald trump. It was bad enough Trump vaguely shamed White Supremacists for violently protesting by killing a woman and injuring many over a statue of a Confederate soldier. It is even scarier now than ever before to accept that donald trump is our President. donald trump has come down harder on people like Jemele Hill and Colin Kapernick for utilizing their rights to freedom of speech and expression than actual Nazis. He speaks to the American public and addresses world leaders as if he is still on his reality TV series ‘The Apprentice.’ Absolutely nothing Trump says is diplomatically or politically correct. His speeches are purposefully polarizing not political. We have all joked (cough cough, Kanye) that Bush did not care about black people, but Trump by far has proven that as far back as his father being a Klan member, he DOES NOT care about Black people. As nuts as I believe Kim Jong Un is, his levels of accuracy in calling Trump a “rogue,” “dotard,” “gangster” are unmatched.
We all know by now what Trump meant by “Make America Great Again” was to turn civilization counter-clockwise (back to when ‘English settlers robbed the real Native Americans of their land and claimed it their own) and denounce people of color as anything but equals. Decent white Americans with natural human morals have to band together with people of color to stand up to Trump’s ridiculous “mentally deranged behavior” (another spot on Kim Jung Un quotable) and set the appropriate standard our country should represent. This country is labeling and treating us like insignificant rodents that disgust them as they cannot comprehend the idea that we are actually their equals. It is interesting how in current day America you are never committing a crime for murdering a mouse, you’re simply keeping our streets clean. However, substitute that mouse with a dog or….gorilla being and you are punished and ridiculed by the entire human race. Now let’s have that same energy for our fellow man. #IStandWithKap.
