Before he suddenly passed away, Elijah Cummings was one of the top members of Congress investigating Donald Trump on numerous fronts.
The Maryland Rep. had launched inquiries into Trump’s business dealings, including ones involving his family, so it’s no surprise the president went after him numerous times on Twitter.
In separate tweets, Trump called Cummings a “racist” and described Baltimore, the city he largely represents, “rat-infested.”
....As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded. Cumming District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 27, 2019
Now that Cummings has passed away, reportedly due to complications from long-standing health issues, Trump is changing his tune on Twitter.
45 tweeted, “My warmest condolences to the family and many friends of Congressman Elijah Cummings. I got to see first hand the strength, passion and wisdom of this highly respected political leader. His work and voice on so many fronts will be very hard, if not impossible, to replace!”

The tweet didn’t fool many on the social media platform. Numerous people pointed out how Trump’s newfound “condolences” don’t match up with his past behavior regarding the famed civil rights leader and congressman.

Others just straight up went for the president in Cummings’ honor.
Your impeachment and removal will be dedicated to Elijah.— Jeffrey Guterman (@JeffreyGuterman) October 17, 2019
Words are hollow when you constantly attack Democratic Party calling them socialist and do nothing‘s. Fact of the matter is the complete opposite. Democrats have passed over 250 bills that you and Senate Republican leadership ignore. Death shouldn’t be the only unifying policy— ♻️🇺🇸 Christopher Zullo (@ChrisJZullo) October 17, 2019
Approximately 0% chance Trump wrote this. Higher than a 5th grade writing level.— M0ser (@TM0s41) October 17, 2019
Yep we all saw how you respected him - you called Cummings a "racist" and attacked him over and over on Twitter. We have to ask if these attacks contributed to his decline in health! #RIPElijah https://t.co/PcbWQMs3zw— (((DeanObeidallah))) (@DeanObeidallah) October 17, 2019
This isn't how you tweeted about him when he was alive. You are scum. #RIPElijah— Jeffrey Guterman (@JeffreyGuterman) October 17, 2019
Elijah Cummings was a true patriot, a warrior that fought for the citizens of Baltimore as fiercely as he fought for the rule of law. He was dignified, brave, loyal & supremely wise.— MiddleChildSyndrome (@Melmerizer) October 17, 2019
In other words...Rep. Cummings was everything that YOU will never be. #RestInPowerElijah ✌️
Thank you to whoever of the president’s advisors wrote this. 👊🏼— Andrea 🌹 (@catACH317) October 17, 2019
This is the fakest statement in presidential history. Trump called his district rat-infested in a racist tirade and mocked him when burglars tried to rob his home. He shouldn’t get to even say the name Elijah Cummings.— Adam Best (@adamcbest) October 17, 2019
The son of a sharecropper, Cummings was a formidable orator who passionately advocated for the constituents in his majority Black district, which encompasses a large section of Baltimore as well as its upper class suburbs.
He had been facing significant health challenges recently and was in and out of the hospital, missing votes and orders of business in his committee.
Cummings was spotted several times in recent weeks with a breathing tube in his nose connected to oxygen while on the House floor. He could also be seen operating a motorized wheelchair throughout the Capitol and using the assistance of a walker.
