Cleveland Browns defensive end Chris Smith is mourning the loss of his girlfriend, Petara Cordero.
The 26-year-old woman was struck and killed on I-90 West in Cleveland on Wednesday (September 11) morning, according to a statement from the NFL team.
Smith’s tire blew out, causing his Lamborghini to veer left and strike the center median wall on I-90 westbound near the West 140th Street exit ramp.
After the one-car accident, Cordero exited the vehicle and was standing on the north shoulder with the 27-year-old NFL player when a 47-year-old woman driving a Mazda struck the passenger door of the Lamborghini and then hit Cordero.
Cordero was pronounced dead at Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital, reports ABC.
The young woman leaves behind a newborn baby as the couple welcomed their daughter, Haven Harris Smith, in August.
Smith was by her side during the birth, missing a pre-season game to attend the birth.
According to police records, Smith was not injured during the incident nor was he impaired at the time.
The 47-year-old woman was also taken to the hospital, where she was treated and released after admitting to drinking.
Still, no charges have been filed and toxicology reports are pending, reports ABC.
Browns coach Freddie Kitchens visited with Smith at his home following Cordero’s death.
His teammates were informed of her death during a team meeting later that day.
“Words cannot describe the sorrow we feel for Chris following the loss of his girlfriend, Petara,” team owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam, said in a statement. “Our entire organization mourns with Chris, his family and the Cordero family. We will do everything possible to offer them our support, comfort and any resources in this most difficult time.”
