Sarah Palin was the first female to receive the Republican Party's vice presidential nomination, in 2008. Prior to being selected as running mate to presidential nominee John McCain, Palin served as governor of Alaska, the first woman elected to the post. After McCain lost the election, Palin stepped down as governor, cutting her term short by two years. While she has proven to be a polarizing figure in politics, her outdoors TV show Sarah Palin's Alaska was a ratings record-breaker for TLC. She was a contributor to FOX News, and her memoir Going Rogue: An American Life, was a best seller.
