Trayvon Martin Memorial Removed But Preserved

A memorial to Trayvon Martin has been removed from where it stood in a suburb of Orlando to the Sanford Museum.

An informal memorial to Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old student who was killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer, has been removed from where it stood in a suburb of Orlando.
City officials in Sanford, Florida, said that the materials from the memorial are being preserved and that they have been moved to the Sanford Museum.
Among the items was a large wood cross with an American flag on its top. There were also several wreaths with artificial flowers and many loose artificial flowers. A ceramic angel, a ceramic cross, wood and metal hearts and footballs were also part of the memorial.
The memorial had previously been in the gated community where the teenager was killed in February.
The decision to move the items came after discussions between Trayvon's family and officials of the city of Sanford, where the unarmed teenager was shot and killed by George Zimmerman. "All the items retrieved have been carefully handled and inventoried,” the city said in a statement.
Zimmerman, 28, was released from jail in Sanford last week after he posted a $1 million bond. He has been charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Trayvon.
The shooter pleaded not guilty, saying he shot the teenager in self-defense. He invoked Florida's controversial "Stand Your Ground" law, which allows people to use deadly force if they feel they are in imminent danger.
